What is Songen?

Songen is a generative music studio. On Mac, it’s a DAW where you can explore musical ideas, edit notes, record audio and MIDI, arrange a song, and mix with instruments, effects, and automation. On iPhone and iPad, it’s a pocket studio for generating and shaping loops. Start with a style or a feeling, then follow the music wherever it takes you.

What platforms does Songen support?

Songen is available on iPhone and iPad via the App Store, and on Mac via the Mac App Store. There is no Android or Windows version.

How much does Songen cost?

Songen is free to download. Premium is sold **in the app** through Apple: **monthly, annual, and lifetime** options (exact prices are localized in the App Store or Mac App Store paywall — we don’t list fixed dollar amounts on the website because they change by region and store). One Premium subscription unlocks the same entitlements on **Mac, iPhone, and iPad**. Subscribe on either store; Premium carries across your Apple ID on both platforms. Premium includes unlimited generating, saving projects, and exporting MIDI and audio. The free tier lets you generate within daily limits; **export and named project save require Premium** on Mac and iOS.

Can I sell beats made with Songen?

Yes. Songen generates royalty-free beats, so you fully own what you make. Sell them, license them, or release them as your own songs, with no clearance, no attribution, and no extra fees.

Where do the loops come from?

Songen has a built-in music generation engine, crafted by musicians, that writes MIDI notes from scratch. There are no premade loops; nothing is stitched together from a sample library, so every loop is composed fresh. The engine runs entirely on your device with no internet needed, which makes generation instant and on the fly.

Is Songen free?

Songen is free to download and free to try, with no time limit. **Save, export, and unlimited generating require Songen Premium** on both Mac and iPhone/iPad. **Mac:** Free accounts get up to **100 full generations per day**. You can recover an unsaved session after a crash (`Recovered.songen`), but **Save, Save As, and export** (MIDI, audio, stems) need Premium. **iPhone & iPad:** Free users can generate loops within the app’s daily free allowance (check the app for the current limit). **Export requires Premium** — there is no free export tier. Premium unlocks unlimited generating, saving projects, and exporting on every platform. One subscription works on Mac, iPhone, and iPad when you subscribe through Apple.

Does Songen use AI?

Songen uses AI, but a hand-crafted kind rather than a model trained on other people's music. Its algorithms were built by professional music producers from musical taste and expertise, and they generate editable MIDI on your device, so every result is original and royalty-free.

How is Songen different from Suno and other AI music generators?

Unlike Suno and other cloud-based generators that render a finished audio track, Songen generates editable MIDI foundations right on your device. The engine is built into the app, works offline, and returns a loop in a few milliseconds, so your creative flow never stops to wait. No third-party music trains it, so everything you make is royalty-free and truly yours.

Can I edit the notes Songen generates?

Yes, the generated instrument parts are MIDI, so you can change any note. You can shape a loop surgically by regenerating individual tracks or even single sections, then add finishing touches in Songen's smart piano roll, which highlights the chord notes.

Does Songen export MIDI and audio?

Songen exports both MIDI and audio, as full mixes or separated stems. On Mac, export audio as WAV or M4A, and MIDI as a combined file or separate track files. Audio exports include your recorded and imported audio alongside the instruments and effects; MIDI exports contain the instrument notes. Mac audio rendering runs in the background, with export time depending on the project and plugins. On iPhone and iPad, audio exports in real time.

Can I use Songen tracks in other music software?

Yes. Songen exports standard MIDI and audio files, so you can continue in another DAW with editable notes or audio stems. On Mac, you can also record, arrange, and mix a complete song inside Songen, using built-in instruments and effects or third-party Audio Unit plugins.

Does Songen work offline?

Songen works fully offline: it generates and exports with no internet connection. The only time you need a connection is to buy the Songen Premium subscription.

Is Songen available on Android?

Songen is not available on Android. It runs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Do I need to know music theory to use Songen?

No. Start by listening and choosing what feels right. Editable notes and chord-aware piano rolls let you see and hear how the music fits together. As you try different chords, grooves, and sounds, you can build an ear for harmony, explore unfamiliar styles, and discover production techniques along the way—whether you’re making your first track or have been producing for years.

What genres does Songen support?

Songen generates nearly 50 music styles, from Drift Phonk and Trap to Amapiano, House, Lo-fi and Cinematic. Browse them all on the Music styles page.

Does Songen make lyrics or vocals?

Songen generates instrumental parts as editable MIDI; it doesn't generate lyrics or sung vocals. On Mac, you can record your own vocals, guitar, and other audio directly into the timeline, or import an existing recording and mix it with your track. On iPhone and iPad, Songen focuses on generating and shaping instrumental loops.

Can I use my own instruments and effects on Mac?

Yes. Songen for Mac hosts third-party Audio Unit instruments and effects alongside its built-in synths, sampler, and effects. Choose instruments for MIDI tracks, add effects to tracks or the master, save sounds as presets, and automate parameters over the song.

Can I record and arrange a full song on Mac?

Yes. Record audio or MIDI, import audio files, and arrange clips alongside generated parts on the timeline. Edit notes in the piano roll, trim and stretch audio, and build transitions with arrangement FX clips. The mixer includes track groups, effects, and automation, so you can take a song from its first idea to a full mix inside Songen.
