How to mix kick and bass together for a tight, clear low end

Kick and bass fit when only one owns the sub. Split them by frequency, line up their phase, and duck the bass under the kick for a low end that stays tight on any system.

Kick and bass fit together when only one of them is the lowest instrument. Two sounds can’t both be the lowest, so you pick one to own the sub frequencies below about 100 Hz and let the other sit just above it. From there, three moves keep the low end tight: choose notes that don’t collide, line up their phase so they stop cancelling each other, and duck the bass out of the way each time the kick hits. Do that and the low end holds up on club systems, laptops and earbuds alike.

This applies across genres. The frequencies shift a little between a metal kick and a house sub, but the jigsaw idea is the same everywhere: give each instrument its own space and stop them walking on top of each other.

Why do kick and bass clash in the low end?

They clash because low frequencies are physically hard to tell apart, and because you can only ever have one lowest instrument. Two low sounds want the same tiny slice of the spectrum, and down there your ear can barely separate them.

You hear two notes as separate when their frequencies differ by about 6%. High up, that gap is wide: the notes around A4 sit 26 Hz apart. Down at the bottom of the bass, the same 6% is only about 2 Hz, so two low notes blur into one. Worse, long low waveforms overlap and cancel when they don’t line up. A 40 Hz wave stretches almost 30 feet, and when the kick’s wave and the bass’s wave drift out of step they subtract from each other and the low end drops out for a beat. That flicker is what makes an untamed low end feel weak and unpredictable.

So the goal is simple: keep the two instruments from fighting for the same frequencies at the same time, and keep whatever they share in step.

Which instrument should own the sub?

The steadier of the two owns the sub, and the busier one sits just above it. Whichever part plays fewer notes takes the lowest register, because a slow, sustained sound down there stays clean, while a busy line full of movement gets muddy if you push it too low.

Two setups cover almost everything:

  • Low kick, tighter bass on top. A steady kick holds the sub around 40 to 80 Hz, and a busy bassline lives a little higher, with its lowest notes around 80 to 120 Hz. Common in fast, dense productions.
  • Low bass, tighter kick on top. A slow, sustained bass owns the sub, and a tight, clicky kick sits on top of it as a short nugget. Common when the bassline is the main event.

You don’t always have to interlock them. Some tracks are built around the bass and treat the kick as an afterthought, or the other way round. Featuring one and letting it dominate the low end is a real choice, not a mistake. The only bad option is letting both fight for the bottom with no plan.

The cleanest low end starts before you touch a plug-in, in the notes themselves. Keep the kick’s fundamental and the bass’s fundamental off the same note at the same moment. If the kick is tuned near E and the bass hits an F right on top of it, they cancel and no amount of EQ fully saves it. Move that bass note up an octave, or pick one that agrees with the kick. Then interlock the rhythms so the two mostly land in each other’s gaps:

Press both. Same notes, same tempo, only the bass placement changes, and the difference in how solid the low end feels is the whole lesson. Start from a foundation that already fits instead of trying to rescue a pile-up later.

How do you split kick and bass by frequency?

Split them so one instrument is dominant below 100 Hz and the other is dominant just above it, then carve the low mids on whichever needs to be tighter. This is the EQ half of the jigsaw. Here is where each range lands for a typical kick and bass:

Two things there matter most. First, the low mids: on a busy kick in a dense mix, a steep cut around 250 to 500 Hz tightens it and quietly opens room for guitars, vocals and everything else, so it feels like a low-end and high-mid boost at once. On a slow, featured kick, leave that region alone so it can bloom. Second, the mid-range boosts sit in different places on purpose. A kick gets its click up around 2 to 5 kHz; a bass gets its definition down around 1 kHz. Because they reach for different spots, they stop fighting.

How do you stop kick and bass cancelling each other?

Line up their phase so the two waveforms reinforce instead of subtract. Whatever low frequencies they share need to move in step, or you get that beat-to-beat volume flicker in the sub.

For a synth sub, do it in three steps:

  1. Make the sub consistent. Set the oscillator to start from the same point in its cycle on every hit instead of a random one. A free-running sub gives you a different waveform each time, and you can’t align something that never repeats. Keep the sub mono and turn off any detuned unison on it, which smears the phase all over again.
  2. Align it to the kick. Nudge the sub’s starting phase, or delay the bass by a fraction of a millisecond, until the summed waveform stops dipping. Watch it on an oscilloscope, then close your eyes and A/B, because the goal is what you hear, not a pretty picture.
  3. Follow the notes. When the bassline changes pitch, the phase relationship changes with it. Automate the phase per note, or link the phase control to note velocity so each note lands aligned.

There is a composition fix too. A saturator adds harmonics above the fundamental, and choosing one that’s musically related to the kick, an octave or two up, gives the two instruments extra common ground that reinforces instead of clashing.

How do you duck the bass under the kick?

Duck the bass every time the kick hits so they share the same instant without piling up. Sidechain compression or a volume shaper pulls the bass down for a moment on each kick, then lets it swell back. Shape the dip so it sits in the pocket rather than pumping the whole bar, and match its length to the kick.

For sustained basslines, don’t duck the whole thing equally. Split the bass into a sub layer and a mid layer, or use multiband ducking, and duck the sub hard while the mids barely move. The sub is where phase cancellation does real damage, so that is where the kick needs the most room; the mids can keep playing through and hold the groove. How do you glue kick and bass together?

Once they fit, bus the kick and bass together and process them gently as one instrument. This is the polish, and it only works after the first steps are solid; it will not rescue a bad kick and bass relationship, only tighten a good one.

On that shared bus, keep the moves small:

  • A touch of saturation, or a little sub-harmonic weight, to fuse them.
  • 1 to 2 dB of bus compression with a slowish attack around 30 ms, so the transient still pokes through.
  • A gentle soft clip to catch the peaks.

A/B every move with your eyes closed. If you find yourself reaching for more than 2 dB of compression here, the fix belongs earlier in the chain, back at the notes or the phase. Getting the low end to sit is mostly arrangement and phase; the bus is the last 10%.
