How to make trap melodies: the five types every producer should know

Trap melodies are everything in the beat except the drums and the 808: the chords, the lead line, the counter melody, the textures and the small decorative accents on top. To make one, set a minor scale, pick a root-note pattern using the numbers 1 to 7, build chords by skipping every other scale note, then pull a lead line out of the chord tones. Most producers never learn that there is more than one kind of trap melody, and it costs them. A one-chord loop gives you a dark drill-leaning beat, a two-chord top line gives you something catchy and radio-shaped, and a call-and-response figure gives you bounce. What does “trap melody” mean?
When producers say “the melody” in trap, they mean the whole melodic side of the beat, not one lead line. A finished trap melody usually stacks four or five layers:
- Chords, the harmonic foundation that sets the mood.
- A lead or top line, the part you could hum back.
- A counter melody, a second line that answers the lead in its gaps.
- Texture, a resampled or pitched layer that makes it sound sampled instead of stock.
- Accents, one-off phrases and small decorations that appear once or twice.
You do not need all five in every beat. But when a beat you made feels flat next to a professional one, the difference is almost always in the last three layers, because most tutorials stop after the chords.
What scale and BPM do trap melodies use?
Trap melodies sit in a minor scale at roughly 130 to 160 BPM, with most beats landing between 140 and 150. Natural minor is the default and covers most dark or moody beats. Harmonic minor adds a raised note that gives a tense, Spanish-leaning color, and Phrygian pushes further into menace. Start with natural minor.
Turn on scale highlighting in your piano roll and every note you click stays in key. I write most examples in A minor because it maps to the white keys, but the shapes transpose anywhere: select everything and shift it up or down until it sits where your 808 sounds best.
How do you build trap chords without knowing music theory?
You need two moves: number the scale, and skip notes to build chords. Number the seven notes of your minor scale 1 through 7, so in A minor: A is 1, B is 2, C is 3, D is 4, E is 5, F is 6, G is 7. Chord progressions become number patterns, and once you memorize a few patterns you stop guessing.
These are the patterns I reach for, with the sound each one buys you:
- 1-6-5 (Am, F, Em): the hip-hop staple, moody but resolved.
- 1-4 (Am, Dm) or 1-5 (Am, Em): two-chord loops, the backbone of catchy trap.
- 1-7-6 (Am, G, F): emotional, the classic pain-beat descent.
- 1-5-6-4 (Am, Em, F, Dm): melodic, common in UK rap.
- 1-6-7 (Am, F, G): tense, because it never lands back on 1.
- 1 alone: one root note, repeated. The foundation of dark trap and drill.
To turn a root note into a chord, add the note two scale steps above it, then two more. Skip one, skip one. A becomes A-C-E, F becomes F-A-C. Because you only used scale notes, the chord fits automatically. Type 1: How do you make a dark one-chord melody?
Stay on one root note and create movement inside the chord instead of between chords. Changing chords resolves tension; refusing to change them is what makes a beat feel dark. Build one minor chord, then:
- Remove the middle note. A bare root and fifth sounds hollow and cold, and it is the foundation of a huge share of drill.
- Drop one note an octave to change the voicing without changing the chord.
- Add a single tension note from the scale that is not in the chord, and resolve it back.
Repeat that for eight bars and it holds up, because the darkness comes from the repetition. This is the move when you want a dark trap or drill beat: minimal harmony up top so the 808 pattern and drums carry the movement.
Type 2: How do you make a catchy top-line melody?
Take a two-chord loop and pull single notes out of it so they play one at a time instead of stacked. A 1-4 or 1-6 loop is enough. Copy the chords up an octave, delete the middle notes, then break the remaining notes apart in time so they form a line. The line is guaranteed to work over the chords because it is made of chord tones.
Then make it human:
- Repeat the phrase, and change only the last note or two on the final repeat.
- Randomize the velocities a little so no two hits are identical.
- Nudge a few notes just off the grid. Nobody plays perfectly, and quantized-to-death melodies read as stiff.
Keep it repetitive on purpose. A catchy trap melody is short, loops without wearing out, and leaves the variation to the drums and arrangement. This is the shape behind most pop trap and melodic rap beats: two chords, one earworm line, nothing else fighting for attention.
Type 3: How do you write a counter melody?
A counter melody answers the main line in its gaps, using mostly notes the chords already contain. Find the spaces where the lead breathes, and place two or three notes there. Chord tones are the safe choice; one deliberate non-chord scale note adds tension, and one is usually enough.
The rule that matters: do not overdo it. If an artist will rap or sing on the beat, their voice is an instrument too, and a busy counter melody eats the space it needs. Type 4: How do you make call-and-response melodies?
Split your loop into four slots of equal length and treat them as a conversation. The call is a short phrase; the response reacts to it. This structure is why some melodies feel alive while others just repeat. Four patterns that work:
- Call, space, call, response. Play the phrase, leave a gap, play it again, then answer it in slot four. The gap builds the craving; the response pays it off.
- The octave jump. Same phrase in slots two and four, but pitch the second one up an octave. Your ear locks onto the melody the first time and the jump stamps it in.
- Mirror an arpeggio. Climb four notes up the scale as the call, then flip the same notes downward as the response.
- Three repeats, then a twist. Play the phrase three times and change one or two notes on the fourth. The familiar part earns the surprise.
These phrases can be dead simple, three notes each. The hook is the back-and-forth itself, not the notes. A related trick: end the loop with a note that walks up to a fifth above the root, landing on the downbeat of the next loop. It always resolves, and the predictability of that landing buys you room to be unpredictable everywhere else.
Type 5: How do you add texture and accent melodies?
Texture is the layer that makes a beat sound sampled instead of programmed, and you make it by resampling your own melody. Bounce the melody to audio, then abuse the copy: pitch it up one or two octaves, stretch it to half speed, filter out the lows, drown it in reverb, and blend it in under the original. It stops reading as a melody and starts reading as shimmer. Muting it afterward makes the beat feel like something is missing, which is exactly what the layer is for.
A second version of the same idea: bounce the entire melody bus and repitch it two semitones up or down. The stretching artifacts plus a little tape-style wobble and noise sell the illusion that you flipped a vinyl sample, when every note is yours.

Which type of trap melody should you choose?
The type you pick decides the beat, so choose it before you place a note:

Producers with a fast workflow are not more inspired than you. They have internalized these types plus a handful of number patterns, so when one idea stalls they switch systems instead of clicking in notes and hoping.
How do you layer and arrange the melody?
Layer by asking what the current sound is missing, and arrange by removing layers, not adding them. A lone guitar wants a soft piano doubling it, or a flute answering it. A piano wants strings above or a synth bass below. Whatever you add should occupy a different register or texture than what is already there; two sounds fighting for the same frequencies layer worse than one sound alone.
For arrangement, build the fullest section first, then subtract. Hook: everything plays. Verse: pull the strings, the counter melody and the texture layer so the artist has room.
